I finished to read L’OEuvre, Émile Zola.
I’m sorry for the spoilers, but the main character, Claude, committed suicide and it’s over.
I’m sorry.
I’m depressed by the story.
Helpless….
After the funeral and burial, the last conversation between Bonglan and Sandos is sad. The last words of the story, “Now, let’s get back to work.” Claude, who committed suicide, remains dead forever, but the two alive can return to work.
Interesting to follow on from this story, as Zola once replied to Cezanne after he wrote to say how much Zola’s letters uplifted hm in trying to forget his sorrows –
” Then you write that you are sad: I reply that I am very sad, very sad. It’s the wind of time blowing around our heads, no one is to blame, not even ourselves; the fault lies in the times in which we live. ”
Quite prophetic for our times don’t you think!
Oh, yes….!
